Action against academies spreads

Issue No. 2257

Action against academy schools is snowballing.

This week, NUT union members at Fairfax School in Birmingham voted by 94 percent to strike against an academy proposal. They are set to strike on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

Teachers in the NASUWT union at Heanor Gate Science College in Derbyshire may also strike on 28, 29 and 30 June against academy plans.

Meanwhile NASUWT members at another Derby school struck on Wednesday and Thursday of last week against academy plans.

The governing body at Ilkeston School is pressing ahead with plans to convert to an academy despite the resistance.

The school could become an academy from September. It would then be run by the Ormiston Education Trust.

And teachers in the NUT union will ballot for action at Canon Palmer Catholic High School if it decides to convert to academy status.

The union says most teachers at the school in Redbridge oppose academies
