Women in Saudi Arabia find a vehicle for freedom

Issue No. 2257

A campaign in Saudi Arabia to break the ban on women drivers began on Friday of last week.

Women have posted videos on the internet of them breaking the sexist law—the only law of its type in the world.

Dozens of women have now got behind the wheel to drive forward reforms. Organisers claim inspiration from the uprisings across the region.

Saudi authorities are nervous about provoking wider unrest in the country, and have yet to seriously crack down on the women drivers.
