“David Cameron—you ain’t seen nothing yet.”
That was the message from Dave Prentis, general secretary of the Unison union, as he issued a “call to arms” at the union’s conference this week.
“Next week we stand firmly behind our brothers and sisters from PCS, UCU, NUT and ATL on the 30 June,” he said. “Their fight is our fight.”
The thousands of union members in the hall erupted at this.
If the government doesn’t listen, he continued, “We will strike to defend our pensions. It will be a campaign of strike action without precedent.”
He said it would be “the fight of our lives”—“a fight we can win, a fight we must win, and together a fight we will win”.
He called on delegates to “prepare for action”. “You’ve got a massive job to do,” he added.
The challenge for every activist now is to turn his words into real action—and keep up the pressure to set the timetable for strikes.
