A man was rushed to hospital on Monday after slashing his own throat with a razor to stop his forced deportation to Jamaica by the UK Border Agency (UKBA).
UKBA stated he suffered “superficial injuries”, but another source said that emergency services had to glue his throat together. He was being deported on a passenger flight for overstaying his visa. Less than two weeks earlier another detainee cut off part of his tongue hours before he was to be deported to Jamaica.
The UKBA has deported more than 50 asylum seekers to Sri Lanka—the week after a Channel 4 documentary exposed systematic torture of Tamils by the government.
The documentary led David Cameron to say, “The Sri Lankan government does need to be investigated”. A total of 54 Sri Lankans were deported on a charter flight. Of these 42 were “failed” asylum seekers, the vast majority Tamils.
One man’s removal was blocked after he attempted suicide. As the deportees arrived in Colombo they were taken in for questioning.
The UKBA plans a similar flight on 30 June.
