Firefighters will leave pension scheme

Issue No. 2258

More than a quarter of firefighters will leave their pension scheme if contributions go up, a union survey has revealed.

Some 27 percent of the 8,000 FBU union members surveyed said the planned 3 percent contributions rise would force them out of the scheme.

The survey was launched at the FBU’s conference as a first step in joining the fight over public sector pensions.

Earlier this month FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said the government’s refusal to negotiate on the issue would “make strike action more likely, more quickly”.

Backing the 30 June strikes, he said, “The attacks we face are common across the public sector and we need to stand together to defend ourselves.”

He’s right.

The FBU should start its own ballot as soon as possible to be ready to join the next wave of strikes.
