Colleges: strikes and solidarity

Issue No. 2258

UCU union members struck at Barnsley College on Monday of this week. It was their second successful strike in the battle to save jobs.

Dave Gibson, UCU branch secretary at the college, said the strike was “solid”.

“We had a good number of workers picketing plus a big group of students out supporting us,” he said.

“We’ve had a £500 donation from Barnsley NUT, and other Yorkshire colleges have done collections.”

Workers plan to strike again on Thursday of this week, and on Wednesday and Thursday of next week.

Newcastle College

Lecturers and students protested in Newcastle on Thursday of last week against huge cuts planned at Newcastle College.

Management want to make 180 workers redundant—and three quarters of them would be in teaching.

Those left behind face bigger workloads and pay cuts.

Donations to the Barnsley College strike fund can be sent to Barnsley College UCU, c/o 33 Western Street, Barnsley S70 2BT. Cheques payable to Barnsley College UCU. Send messages of support to d.gibson@barnsley.ac.uk
