LGBT cuts: Cameron is not on our side

Issue No. 2258

David Cameron is pushing through cuts that will destroy the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people.

But he is keen to pitch himself as a friend. The Tory leader hosted a reception for LGBT organisations and celebrities at Downing Street last week.

He praised Tory progress on LGBT issues and attacked other countries for their bad human rights record.

But the real story is the Tory cuts.

Cameron’s government has slashed funding to vital organisations. In London LGBT health support organisations have had 43 percent of their funding cut. This is happening across Britain.

And a lot of the remaining money is going to fund bigots.

The Catholic Children’s Society shut its adoption wing rather than comply with the law demanding that gay parents are treated equally.

Yet this charity is being given £89,000 to counsel young people in schools.

Government money has been withdrawn from the Poppy Project, which was set up to help women trafficked into prostitution.

The £6 million to help manage the service will now go to the Salvation Army, which opposes “sexual intimacy between people of the same sex”.

Cuts to benefits will see claimants with HIV forced back to work.

Many LGBT people work in the public sector which is facing huge attacks on pensions, jobs and conditions.

These are ideological cuts that punish the most vulnerable.

Cameron wants to divide our resistance by whipping up Islamophobia, claiming Muslims are the source of homophobia.

But a survey released this week by think-tank Demos shows that 47 percent of Muslims said, “I am proud of how Britain treats gay people.” This was higher than both the general average and that for Christians.
