Fawley oil refinery workers fight a lockout

Issue No. 2259

Workers from the GMB union are staging demonstrations at the ExxonMobil’s Fawley oil refinery in Hampshire over 20 locked out workers.

The workers are part of a 100-strong workforce employed by PTF Engineering.

This is part of the Rowley Group that has held the contract for mechanical maintenance on the site for 20 years.

The work was transferred to a new contractor, Hertel, based in Middlesbrough.

According to the GMB, PTF Engineering advised the workers that their employment has been transferred to Hertel under the Tupe legislation.

Hertel has told the remaining 80 workers that they have jobs. GMB regional officer Gary Cook said, “This lock out is illegal and will not be accepted by GMB.”
