Government letter reveals effects of cuts

Issue No. 2259

A leaked letter has shown that the government knows that up to 40,000 families could be made homeless because of its £26,000 cap on benefit payments.

The letter, sent on behalf of communities secretary Eric Pickles by his private secretary Nico Heslop to Downing Street, states the government “anticipated” that “we could see an additional 20,000 homeless acceptances as a result of the total benefit cap.”

It also says that these are on top of the already anticipated “20,000 additional acceptances”.

The Tories have repeatedly denied that the cuts would have such a devastating impact.

Meanwhile, a Sheffield Hallam University report has found that 60,000 people in Wales are to be kicked off their incapacity benefits, 30,000 of them losing all their benefits.
