Poor people with children need to earn 20 percent more this year to maintain their living standards as living costs rise.
That’s the conclusion of a damning report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
A couple with two children now needs to earn a gross total of £36,800 a year, compared with £29,727 last year.
The figure for a single parent has leapt in a year from £12,454 to £18,243.
This makes it harder for low-paid women to earn enough even to cover childcare costs.
Donald Hirsch, the report’s author, said that for some poor people, trying to make ends meet was like “running up the down escalator”.
The report blames wage cuts and freezes, price rises and attacks on benefits for the dire situation ordinary people face.
