Sheffield journalists to strike

Issue No. 2260

Some 40 journalists in Sheffield were set to begin an indefinite strike on Friday of this week against job losses.

The workers at South Yorkshire Newspapers voted 100 percent for the strike.

This is a brilliant, defiant message to management.

Bosses want to axe 18 jobs in the editorial and advertising departments.

The papers are part of the multinational Johnston Press group, which is attacking jobs, pay and conditions at local newspapers across the country.

Staff have been told of plans to have one editor covering the South Yorkshire Times, the Goole Courier and the Selby Times instead of three.

A reporter and editorial assistant at the Mexborough office could also lose their jobs.
