Abortion rights: ‘Dorries – got to go!’

Up to 300 people protested outside parliament, last Saturday defending a woman’s right to free, safe, on-demand access to abortion.

The protest was called in response to Tory MP Nadine Dorries’ and Labour MP Frank Field’s proposals for compulsory counselling for women before they are allowed to have an abortion.

It was announced last week that the Department of Health was considering putting through the proposals without a debate or vote in parliament.

On top of this, the Tories have appointed the

anti-choice organisations Life and Care Confidential to the government’s sexual health forum.

The protest united men and women united against the Tories’ attempt to turn back the clock on women’s rights. Speakers included Green Party MP Caroline Lucas and activist-journalist Laurie Penny.

Penny encouraged everyone on the protest to go back to their schools, workplaces, and communities with arguments for uniting the fights against all the Tories’ cuts to jobs and services.

Lively and angry, the most popular slogan of the protest was “Hey, Ho, Nadine Dorries—Got to go!”
