Burton’s Foods biscuit workers bite back

Issue No. 2260

More than 400 workers at Burton’s Foods biscuit factory in Blackpool struck over pay on Tuesday of this week.

The BFAWU bakers’ union members make Wagon Wheels, Maryland Cookies and Jammie Dodgers.

They voted by 86 percent for strikes in their fight against a below-inflation pay “rise”.

Further one-day walkouts are planned for Monday and Wednesday of next week and 26 July. Union members will also work to rule and bring in an overtime ban.

BFAWU president Ian Hodson said 136 workers had said they wanted to picket, showing the angry mood among staff.

“People have had enough,” he added. “They’re fed up with the way they’ve been treated. The company have taken and taken and taken over the past few years.”
