Essex firefighters step up the fight against attacks

Issue No. 2260

Essex firefighters are stepping up their industrial action as bosses try to force through more attacks on fire crews.

Bosses have been trying to move around firefighters to “plug the gaps” caused by the union’s long-running action against cuts. And they have also continued to cut the number of workers.

The FBU union’s new action, which will begin on Thursday of this week, includes:

lA ban on non-contractual overtime.

lA ban on “acting up” to a higher role and temporary promotions.

lNo new contracts or agreements unless they are negotiated with the union.

North West ballot

Firefighters in the north west of England are demanding to be balloted to join the next big day of strike action over pensions.

It comes after a large FBU delegation joined the 5,000-strong march through Manchester on 30 June.

FBU regional secretary Kevin Brown told them the region’s firefighters are “demanding a ballot so they can take similar action in the very near future”.

Bosses are threatening to recruit scab workers if there is a walkout.
