Fortnum and Mason protester jailed for throwing stick

Issue No. 2260

A 20-year old protester has been jailed for 12 months for his part in the 26 March demonstrations in London.

Francis Fernie, an A-level student from York, was outside luxury department store Fortnum and Mason when he threw two placard sticks towards police.

He pled guilty to a charge of violent disorder at Kingston Crown Court.

Sentencing, Judge Nicholas Price QC said, “The courts have a duty not only to punish those who inflict violence or acts of fear on the public or inflict violence on the police, but also to deter others from behaving in such a way.”

Francis had no previous convictions and was due to start at Sheffield Hallam university in September.
