Library workers plan strike to save service

Issue No. 2261

Library workers in Lambeth, south London, were set to strike on Friday of this week.

The Unison union members are fighting cuts that the union says will destroy the service.

The Labour council is threatening all enquiry desk workers with redundancy and “deleting” all librarian jobs.

Ruth Cashman, Unison steward at West Norwood library, said the workers are “striking for the future of a service we care about”.

She said, “The cuts proposed by the council will mean the end of many of the libraries’ best-loved services: reading groups, author talks, storytimes and ‘silver surfers’.”

Some 90 percent of library workers in Lambeth are in the union.

The action was expected to close all libraries for the day.
