Anti-fascists see off EDL in Portsmouth

by Simon Magorian
Issue No. 2261

Over 300 Portsmouth residents saw off an EDL march last Saturday.

Unite Against Fascism (UAF) called a rally, despite being denied permission to march by the council.

Local MP Mike Hancock and the council tried to pressure us into calling it off.

But Portsmouth Trades Council backed the campaign and local unions and community groups swung into action.

Over a 100 new people signed up to get involved in Portsmouth UAF.

The EDL predicted that 1,500 would march, but they gathered between 300 and 500, mainly bused in.
