Councils are still allowing tens of thousands of homes to be built on floodplains every year—even though the risk of floods is growing, a government report says.
A sub-unit of the government’s Committee on Climate Change found that up to 16,000 houses are built on floodplains each year in England alone.
It warned that in key areas of infrastructure such as flood protection and water supply, Britain is “near its limits”.
And it added that we “could be pushed over the edge by climate change”.
Floods devastated thousands of homes last year.
