Socialist Worker

Anna Fox: Resort

Issue No. 2262

On the face of it, this exhibition is an advertising ploy by summer camp giant Butlins.

It shows families at the resorts, primarily from today.

Photographer Anna Fox wanted to bring wider social issues into the mix.

In one picture a young girl is being made-up to look like a fairy.

For Fox, this brings up questions of aspiration—the girl gazes seriously into a mirror as make-up is applied, as if taking seriously the role society expects of her.

The days of British holiday camps are pretty much numbered, with the birth of cheap flights abroad.

What makes this exhibition interesting is that it respectfully shows ordinary people in their leisure time—whatever the actual intentions of the Butlins PR department.
