Tories' threat to care homes

Issue No. 2262

Private firms are eyeing up care homes owned by Southern Cross, which collapsed in June.

Former boss of Southern Cross, Philip Scott, is now CEO of the Priory Group.

US private equity firm Advent International owns the group—and wants to grab Southern Cross homes.

Some Priory Group care homes are failing. Bradford council suspended admissions to one last December after allegations of abuse and neglect.

The government’s Care Quality Commission then allowed the home, Cooper House, to assess itself. It declared itself problem-free in March this year.

Privatisation, and the Tories’ assault on health and safety, risks more Southern Cross-style tragedies.
