Beirut conference backs Palestine

Issue No. 2263

Some 100 people gathered in Beirut in Lebanon last week for the week-long Viva Palestina Summer University. Its subject was “the new Middle East—people power, democracy and Palestine”.

Speakers included Ghada Karmi, Ronnie Kasrils and activists from Egypt.

The event explored how to take solidarity work with the Palestinian struggle forward. Meetings looked at Israel’s relationship with the US and imperialism and the impact of international support for Palestine.

The successful Boycott, Disinvestment and Sanctions campaign, which has won increasing support internationally, was the focus of many of the discussions.

Plans were made to extend and develop on the successes of the campaign and increase its reach.
