Support grows for victimised bus driver Abdul Omer

Issue No. 2264

The Unite union branch secretary at Swindon Honda has added his backing to the campaign to reinstate sacked Sovereign bus convenor Abdul Omer Mohsin.

“Unite convenor Abdul Omer Mohsin has blatantly been sacked from his post with the Sovereign bus company for being an activist,” Don said. “The company is prepared to pay out rather than reinstate him.

“Abdul is a hardworking, dedicated socialist. He is prepared to work tirelessly for the rights of fellow workers and to defend the union.

“Activists such as him should be entitled to expect the full backing of their union for reinstatement in unfair dismissal cases.

“Without them, the effectiveness of representation in the workplace is diminished.”

Abdul was sacked because he is a leading militant.

He led the pay campaign in 2008, including the occupation of the Transport for London headquarters in 2009.

Together with other militants in his depot, he won a 98 percent yes vote for strikes over equal pay.

But the campaign for his reinstatement has faltered and dragged on for over a year.

During this time Abdul has been under enormous pressure.

He is under constant threat of losing his home because he is struggling to pay his mortgage. His health has deteriorated, seeing him hospitalised on a number of occasions.

Despite management pressure, drivers have still backed Abdul Omer.

They voted in recent months to block moves to re-elect a convenor until his case is dealt with.

Abdul has written formally to Unite asking it to act immediately and launch a campaign to win a ballot for his reinstatement. And he has made a complaint about how his case has been handled.

Abdul told Socialist Worker that he wants to be fighting bus bosses, not his union. But to do that, he needs a campaign to win his job back.

Trade unionists need to pass messages of support for Abdul’s reinstatement, and donate, as a matter of urgency, to the campaign.

Donations payable to Mr A.I. Omer, Barclays, account 20408859, sort code 20-69-15.

Copies of Unite branch cheques should be sent to Peter Kavanagh as the union has promised to match donations: Unite, Woodberry, 218 Green Lanes, Finsbury Park, London N4 2HB.Send messages and donation pledges to Abdul at
