Issue No. 1869

THE DEPARTMENT of Work and Pensions have announced that they want to close the job centre at Whitstable, Kent. People looking for work in Whitstable will now be forced to sign on in Herne Bay or Canterbury, paying a large chunk of their measly £54.65 a week to travel there. Campaigners started a petition as soon as the closure was announced.

They have received a good response at stalls on the High Street. Job centres in Faversham and Gillingham are also threatened with closure.
PCS LOCAL REP

BOSSES HAVE dropped all charges against PCS civil servants' union activist Chris Ford. Management tried to victimise Chris, PCS branch secretary in west London for job centres and benefits offices, for his role in a safety strike. Their case has now fallen apart.
