Was riot reporting part of the problem?

Issue No. 2266

Tony Evans, a sports writer for the Times newspaper, told a National Union of Journalists meeting last week “It has been a particularly grim period for journalism. I found it staggering, the way the news presenters were editorialising.

“We saw Sky News reporters walking down the streets, filming people on their phones, and saying ‘Are you proud of yourself?’ as if they were headmasters. That’s not journalism.

“I’ve been in a riot. You’re demonised by the media and by the political system.

“It was 30 years ago, but I felt the same way they did. The real issues behind it are clearly poverty and inequality”.
