OVER 100 people packed a meeting to discuss how the media stokes up 'fake' fears of so called Islamic terrorism. The meeting was held on the second anniversary of the 11 September attacks on New York at the headquarters of the NUJ journalists' union.

Writer Mike Marqusee described the 'farrago of exaggeration, stereotypes, myths and racism' by which the media sows panic about Muslims. But there are signs the pro-war propaganda is failing, he said. Massive budget cuts in the US mean fire stations are being closed in New York. Warnings of highly toxic air pollution caused by 9/11 were ignored by the Bush government but have now turned out to be true.
