196-day Glasgow University occupation wins

by Sam Bogg
Issue No. 2266

Students who occupied Glasgow University emerged victorious last Sunday after 196 days inside the “Free Hetherington”.

The occupiers gained a series of concessions from management, including no more course cuts and no more compulsory redundancies.

They also won a pledge that there would be no more cuts to student services, a public meeting with the principal, and an agreement that there would be no repercussions for staff and students involved in the occupation.

However, the university still plans to cut its Slavonic studies course, the only one outside London, and the Liberal Arts degree.

The occupation had become a hub of resistance in the area, hosting talks by the likes of academic John Holloway and gigs by various musicians, including Billy Bragg.
