Hundreds defect from Syria's army

Issue No. 2267

Mass army defections have rattled the already shaken regime of president Bashar al-Assad of Syria.

Hundreds of soldiers are reported to have fled the army after witnessing atrocities ordered by Assad. Some are in hiding in Turkey.

One has told of the “cleansing” in Rastan in Homs that caused him to defect. He said, “We were told that people were armed there. But when we arrived, we saw that they were ordinary civilians. We were ordered to shoot them.”

Protests across the country continue to grow and become ever more militant. In Homs last Friday protesters chanted, “We want to execute the president.”
