'It's no wonder riots happened'

Issue No. 2268

Sadie lives on the riot-hit Pembury estate. She told the Hackney meeting:

“The estate has been a dispersal zone for more than five years. That means that kids who live in overcrowded flats in low-income families are not allowed to go out in their own social space.

“They are not allowed to move in groups of more than two. You get arrested just for standing out on the streets—I’ve seen that over and over again.

“It’s no wonder the riots happened.

“There are around 40 under-18s from Hackney in custody tonight.

“As a parent I think we should organise and show we’re supporting them.”
