Striking Oxfordshire youth workers to march on Cameron

Issue No. 2268

Oxfordshire youth workers were set to strike for the second time on Friday of this week. They intend to demonstrate in David Cameron’s constituency, Witney.

Mike Beal, chair of the Unite union’s Community and Youth Workers section, told Socialist Worker, “As of September, Oxfordshire County Council no longer employs a single youth worker.”

Cuts include the “deletion” of 80 jobs, which threaten youth centres and two detached youth teams. Staff will be given new roles, with changes to their conditions, pensions and annual leave.

“If Cameron is in his constituency on Friday, he is more than welcome to come and talk to us,” added Mike.

Now workers in Unison are considering a ballot to join the action.

“We need the council to commit to the philosophy of youth work,” Mike said.
