The RMT rail workers’ union made a principled stand against the EDL in the run-up to Saturday’s demonstration.
Union officials released a statement saying that RMT members would refuse to move trains and would shut stations against the violence the EDL brings.
Steve Hedley, RMT London regional organiser, told Socialist Worker. “We’ve made clear that the EDL are racist and fascist thugs.
“Last time they came to King’s Cross they assaulted workers and members of the public.
“Our drivers will refuse to move trains if they are on them, and will close stations on safety grounds if they turn up.”
EDL supporters planned to meet in Liverpool Street station. The union’s action forced the racists to change their plans.
But RMT workers are furious at London Underground (LU) management for allowing EDL supporters through stations.
This was against the wishes of staff and the travelling public.
Unjum Mirza, political officer of London transport region RMT, has written to LU management.
He is demanding answers as to why the EDL was processed through King’s Cross to Moorgate station.
Unjum told Socialist Worker, “The RMT exposed the Met’s collusion with LU management and forced management to withdraw cooperation.
“But less than 24 hours later, the police and management forced the racists through by a different route.
“At the end of the protest, when police brought some EDL supporters to Mile End station, workers shut it.
“We were not willing to have Mile End station used as an escape route for the racists.
“The police and LU management behaved disgracefully.”
