Chief exec isn't feeling the pinch

Issue No. 2269

Birmingham council chief executive Stephen Hughes is driving the campaign to force through what he has called “painful” cuts.

But he hasn’t been feeling the pinch himself—thanks to outsourcing firm Capita.

The council’s hospitality register shows he accepted a champagne reception and dinner from the company at the posh Savoy, as well as two tickets for a concert.

Capita even picked up the bill for him to have dinner and stay overnight at the Billesley Manor Hotel in Warwickshire—twice.

Meanwhile Birmingham council has launched an inquiry into how Capita was awarded a contract to install fibre optic cables in the city library. None other

than chief executive Stephen Hughes is “personally” handling the inquiry—to make sure everything is “above board”.
