Anti-cuts groups and unions have swung behind the Travellers. South East Region TUC has passed a motion opposing the eviction.
David from Harlow Against the Cuts told Socialist Worker, “People should be able to live where they want without state harassment.”
Basildon council says it has to evict the Travellers because the land is greenbelt. But David pointed out that the council itself is building houses on greenbelt land.
“It’s only greenbelt when it suits them,” he said. “This is an attack on alternative lifestyles that don’t benefit big business.”
Tony, a UCU union member, agreed. He told Socialist Worker, “A Tory council is evicting Travellers here while a Tory government is virtually handing the entire countryside to private developers.”
Banners on the march included Chelmsford Against the Cuts, Harlow Against the Cuts, Basildon Uncut and South East Region TUC.
