Meetings show scale of sparks' anger

Issue No. 2270

Around 50 rank and file electricians met last Friday in Newcastle at a meeting hosted by the Newcastle Central Unite branch.

The meeting was addressed by Unite activist Jerry Hicks.

The electricians came from most of the major sites across Tyneside. They included a number of agency workers.

A small minority said the issue was Polish workers. But the majority knocked that argument back, saying the real issue was one rate for the job and the need for action.

There was real anger at what the employers are trying to do and a clear call was made for the union to organise official action.

Organising to back the electricians

Meetings have been organised across the country to organise the struggle and solidarity for the electricians. These include:

  • Liverpool: Thursday 29 September 7pm, Friends Meeting House, 22 School Lane, L1 3BT

  • Manchester : Saturday 1 October, 12noon, Mechanics Institute, 103 Princess Street, M1 6DD

  • Newcastle: 26 September, Newcastle Labour Club

Protests at sites against the attacks include:

  • Manchester: Wednesday 21 September, 6.30am, Manchester town hall and Baileys site BBC Media City at 10am

  • London: 21 September 6.30am, Farringdon Station, Crown House site
