DAPHNE BURNETT, who died on 28 August aged 69 after a long battle with cancer, covered a wide range of activities during her professional life.
From 1953 to 1971 she was an actor, appearing in Emmerdale for two years and working at the Leeds Playhouse.
She spent the following 19 years in various kinds of social work, and finally, at the age of 56, began a degree in social anthropology at Sussex University.
From 1993 she worked with refugees and was involved in the pensioners’ movement, where in 1995 she met Austin, who she married in 2002.
A lifelong socialist, she spent 25 years in the Labour Party. She left in disgust in 2001 to join the SWP.
Daphne’s fighting spirit, good humour and personal charm will be sadly missed by family, friends and comrades.
