Barnsley College strikes to defend union rep

by Dave Gibson, UCU branch secretary, Barnsley College
Issue No. 2273

Lecturers at Barnsley College struck on Thursday of last week in defence of Graham Mustin, one of their UCU union branch’s joint secretaries.

College management wants to make Graham compulsorily redundant.

The strike was solid on the main sites with over 25 pickets, although less effective on some smaller ones.

Students toured the picket lines noisily demonstrating their support.

Graham’s fellow joint secretary, Lee Short, said, “Our members have shown their determination to defend the old union motto: An injury to one is an injury to all.”

The branch meets next week to decide on future action. This is an important dispute and the whole union needs to get behind Barnsley members.
