Splits in Labour over immigration

Issue No. 2276

Right wing lobby group Migration Watch has launched an anti-immigration e-petition.

Tory MP Nicholas Soames and Labour MP Frank Field chair a cross-party “balanced migration” group. They are already backing the petition.

Labour’s lurch to the right on immigration has been too much for former home secretary David Blunkett.

He complained in the Guardian last week that being “xenophobic” had become “almost fashionable” in Labour circles and warned, “You can’t outdo the Conservatives in relation to immigration”.

He’s right—but it’s a pity he didn’t listen to his own advice when he was in government.
