MPs check laws with Prince Charles

Issue No. 2276

New documents released last week show that Prince Charles can veto any legislation that affects his private interests.

Government ministers have had to get the prince’s permission to go ahead with at least a dozen bills.

They include areas such as planning reform, road safety and coastal access.

His veto is separate to the “royal assent”—a formality where the queen approves all laws passed by parliament.

Isn’t democracy great?
