Palestine vote shows US colours

Issue No. 2276

Unesco, the cultural agency of the United Nations (UN), voted to accept Palestine as a full member on Monday.

The vote was won by 107 to 14, with supporters including Russia, China and France. The US and Israel led the opposition. Another 52 abstained, including Britain.

The US immediately withheld its £50 million annual contribution—22 percent of Unesco’s budget.

Victoria Nuland, of the US state department, cited a law that prohibits funding UN bodies that allow groups not “internationally recognised” as states to join. She also lamented the diminishing control of the US in world affairs.

The vote was part of the Palestinian Authority’s drive for acceptance at the UN. Unesco is the first body to recognise it.

This will not bring freedom for Palestine. But it shows the lengths to which the US will go to support the racist Israeli state—and why it can’t be trusted to broker peace.
