Southampton council workers to vote on deal

Issue No. 2276

Southampton council workers are to vote on whether to accept a deal in their fight against pay cuts.

The offer would see workers on under £22,000—around half the workforce—escape the 5 percent pay cuts.

Workers above that level would still get pay cuts, but slightly reduced.

Unison and Unite union members have suspended their strikes, but a work to rule continues.

The deal is a small improvement on one the workers voted four to one to reject in August. More can still be won. Workers should vote to reject the offer.

Unite is calling on its members to reject the deal. Unison is not making a recommendation one way or the other.

The ballot begins on Friday of this week. The unions were set to hold a joint meeting this Wednesday to discuss the deal.
