Top Boy by Ronan Bennett

Issue No. 2277

Set in the fictional Summerhouse estate in east London, Top Boy shows the lives of young people who see gang membership as their only means of making a living.

The brutality of poverty, and the gang members’ reaction to it, is laid bare.

Series writer Ronan Bennett spent two years talking to east London gang members.

The result has been hailed by critics as a masterpiece, and the closest you’ll get to a British version of The Wire.

The four-part drama has already been broadcast on Channel 4, but you can still catch it on the 4oD website.
