France: Protests grow against Sarkozy’s austerity plans

The French ruling class is desperate to hold on to its triple-A credit rating—and is attacking workers to do it.

On Monday of this week, French president Nicolas Sarkozy pushed new attacks through parliament.

They include increasing the retirement age to 62 and accelerating attacks on pensions.

Politicians claim cuts will solve the crisis. But this is France’s second austerity plan in under three months.

French firefighters demonstrated in Paris against attacks on their conditions last Saturday.
