Trade unionists in Liverpool chased off ten thugs from the racist English Defence League (EDL) last week.
The EDL had tried to attack the north west regional headquarters of the Unite union.
PCS union members, who share the Liverpool office, joined with Unite to confront EDL members who carried St George’s flags and shouted, “UAF off our streets.”
Earlier the same day the EDL had threatened the independent News From Nowhere bookshop in Liverpool’s city centre.
Michelle Smith, Unite North West regional organiser, told Socialist Worker, “The fact that the EDL is now attacking trade unions shows it is more and more turning to fascist tactics.
“We hosted an anti-racist conference in this building in March organised by Unite, Merseyside UAF and the Anthony Walker Foundation.
“We are proud to stand up to the racists. It’s vital that trade unionists mobilise against the EDL.”
