Historical Materialism conference draws hundreds

Issue No. 2278

Some 750 academics, students and activists gathered in London last weekend for the eighth annual Historical Materialism conference.

The four-day conference was marked by a sharper political mood. Participants sought to theorise and understand this year’s momentous events, most notably the Arab Spring.

Marxist author David Harvey gave a keynote lecture on Friday night as part of the conference—an event that attracted over a thousand people.

Other meetings covered the relationship between Marxism and feminism, the nature of bourgeois revolutions and the history of the international communist movement.
