Kirklees builders are set to strike

by Nick Ruff
Issue No. 2278

Building workers in Yorkshire’s Kirklees council have voted overwhelmingly to strike over the implementation of a single status pay deal.

These deals were supposed to harmonise pay and conditions across councils.

The Unite union members voted by 72 percent for strikes, on a 78 percent turnout.

Workers were set to strike from Friday of this week until Monday of next week.

They plan to strike every Monday thereafter until they receive salary protection and an agreement that guarantees no loss of earnings.

The Labour-led council has reneged on an agreement with white collar workers to guarantee no losers under single status. The 1,000 Unison members who lost out are watching the builders’ dispute very closely.
