Tory councils attack jobless

Issue No. 2278

Wandsworth council in south London plans to make unemployed people prove they are seeking work in order to qualify for council housing.

This follows Southend council in Essex putting aside 20 percent of council housing for those with jobs.

Tory rhetoric attacking those on benefits has encouraged councils to go on the offensive.

Work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith wants to “simplify” the benefits system—so that unemployed people can’t get more than £500 a week in total benefits.
