Teachers have paid £46bn net to pensions

Issue No. 2279

The NUT teachers’ union has calculated a shocking figure that blows apart the government lies that public sector pensions are unaffordable.

The union examined the money flowing in and out of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme since it was set up in 1923, adjusting the figures in line with GDP growth.

It has shown that teachers have paid the equivalent of £46 billion more into the fund than it has paid out.
