Racism and the ‘beautiful game’

Issue No. 2279

A row over racism has engulfed international football.

First John Terry, the England captain, was accused of directing a racist rant at an opponent.

Now Sepp Blatter, chief of football’s global governing body Fifa, has waded in.

Blatter remarked that racism on the pitch should be settled by a “handshake”.

Many footballers and anti-racism campaigners have called for his resignation

Footballer Rio Ferdinand posted on Blatter’s Twitter page, “To say what you said about racism in football spoke volumes of your ignorance to the subject.”

Blatter has said he takes racism in football very seriously.
