Chesterfield: an ordinary town preparing for an extraordinary day

Issue No. 2279

With just five days to go until the strikes on 30 November, activists are stepping up their preparations for the day—and not just in the big cities.

Chesterfield in Derbyshire is just one example of how workers in smaller areas are gearing up for the strike.

UCU member James Eaden is helping to organise the strike rally there. “We’ve got materials around lots of workplaces,” he told Socialist Worker. “And we have cars covered in posters advertising it.

“These will be touring picket lines on the day and encouraging people to come and join the march and rally with all the unions.”

Earlier this week the Unison union council branch held a meeting to get ready for the strikes.

This is not a traditionally militant branch. But this time it was different—some 60 people came along and they were all enthusiastic about getting organised.

“They had placards and leaflets piled high for people to collect and use on the picket lines,” said James.

A worker from one school reported that there were already 30 people signed up to picket on the day.

James said, “People are joining the unions. At my college we’re getting lots of people ringing up to join, asking which union they should be in.”

Picket lines are planned at all major workplaces. Then in town there will be a march, an outdoor rally and an indoor rally as well.

“We’re also trying to sort getting somewhere open in town so people can come together after their picket lines and have breakfast,” added James.

“That way they will have a chance to warm up and talk to other strikers—and be near to come to the march.'

Across Britain, 30 November rallies and demonstrations are planned from Aberystwyth to Motherwell, from Bedford to Torquay. It will be a historic day.
