Youth contract won’t help us

Issue No. 2280

The government has come up with a bright idea to tackle youth unemployment—a new “youth contract”.

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg claims it will create 160,000 new work placements for 18 to 24 year olds.

But there’s a flaw—businesses won’t be paying. Instead the government will hand the firms £1 billion towards their wage costs.

And people who leave will have their benefits docked.
