Edinburgh privatisation halted

Issue No. 2280

Campaigners have scored an important victory against the attempt to privatise a large swathe of council services in Edinburgh.

Senior managers had recommended that private company Enterprise be awarded the contract to run the city’s parks, street cleaning and refuse collection.

But these plans have been blocked by a vigorous campaign involving unions Unison and Unite alongside local anti-cuts groups.

The Scottish National Party split from their Liberal Democrat coalition partners and voted with Labour and Greens to keep the service in-house.
